The Avalanche had sail panels because it was using solid body like a suburban, extra strength is needed. The Silverado EV has gone full unibody and has sail panels because strength is needed, I think it helps aerodynamics as well. In a world where every truck is a crew cab, the midgate just makes sense, unless you really think a 5 ft bed is enough to move lumber, sofas, 4 wheelers, etc… this is the future of the pickup truck through engineering, not marketing, not style, not tradition.

this picture might help some folks understand, the sail panels are a structural part of a unibody pickup. I think Honda eliminated them on the newest ridge line but no doubt they had to make other compromises to make it happen, all to make traditional pickup styling nazis happy.


That’s how Honda did it, wouldn’t work with a midgate, not sure if it’s strong enough for full size duty. I’ll let the GM engineers do their thing, I love the midgate and could care less about sail panels.
