Silverado EV Prototype Caught Testing Outside Proving Grounds
GM-Trucks

Chevrolet is stepping up testing of the all new Silverado EV. We’ve heard a lot about the all new, all-electric pickup, but so far, however, we’ve never seen a prototype testing out in public - until today.

I keep looking at these pictures and wonder why this is not the Avalanche EV...
Because the name Avalanche is dead. Avalance never was very successful, anyway, so there's no reason for GM to bring it back. Silverado has the recognition they need and want for their EV.

The above photo looks ok from what it shows but the Hummer SUV is sweet, sweet, sweet… Along with the Hummer, I have the Silverado RST reserved. Do I need both, probably not? But IMO any homeowner NEEDs a truck to carry items around; can carry small things inside the SUV but not a refrigerator or the like.

GM knows their audience and what names have more presence or awareness. Naming it Silverado means it's familiar and more eyes will look at it.

............................but then EVERY PERSON who sees the truck immediately thinks Avalanche. So what did they accomplish?

Highly doubt EVERY PERSON thinks about an Avalance. Pretty sure MOST people who see an EV Silverado have no idea what it is, let alone what Avalance is/was. Yes, people who are familiar with these recognize the similarities, but the vast majority will have no clue.

The Avalanche had sail panels because it was using solid body like a suburban, extra strength is needed. The Silverado EV has gone full unibody and has sail panels because strength is needed, I think it helps aerodynamics as well. In a world where every truck is a crew cab, the midgate just makes sense, unless you really think a 5 ft bed is enough to move lumber, sofas, 4 wheelers, etc… this is the future of the pickup truck through engineering, not marketing, not style, not tradition.

this picture might help some folks understand, the sail panels are a structural part of a unibody pickup. I think Honda eliminated them on the newest ridge line but no doubt they had to make other compromises to make it happen, all to make traditional pickup styling nazis happy.

That’s how Honda did it, wouldn’t work with a midgate, not sure if it’s strong enough for full size duty. I’ll let the GM engineers do their thing, I love the midgate and could care less about sail panels.

I think I would rather pay someone to bring me a refrigerator. Those suckers are heavy, and bed height on a pickup is quite a lift/drop...
+1. One of the few truly good things about middle-age is being able to look in the mirror, say "I will pay some young kids $100 to pick up that old fridge, take it away, and bring in this new fridge.", and still feel good about yourself. :)
