Short EVSE cable...why GM?

Most EVSE's have 25 ft cables. The one included with the SEV is too short to reach my charging port when in my garage...probably only 15 or 18 ft. Unfortunately, the outlet was positioned with a Volt in mind. My Juicebox cable does reach.

Seems like a silly way to save a few $. A lot of people are going to want to plug into their dryer outlet at the front of their garage but the truck is so long the OEM EVSE cable won't reach the charging port unless they back in, which can be a bit hair raising in tight confines.

Got a Grizzl-E Mini but it didn't work properly and had to return it. Would only charge at 2.5 kW in spite of being connected to 50A outlet.

Even when a manufacturer claims their cable is 25ft, it's open to interpretation. This especially applies to the no-name brands on Amazon, but sometimes to major brands as well. Looking at GM's listing for their portable charger I don't even see the cable length specified.

The main "trick" that I've seen is that they'll include the length of the AC cable that plugs into the wall and add it to the length of the cable the exits the charger to the car. They might even include the length of the charger itself and the J1772 connector length. Even adding all of that, I've still seen cables shorter than specified in their description.

So until an industry standard is established, it's still the wild west out there in EV cable land.

Good reason to check State of Charge reviews of chargers.

The Grizzl-E Mini has a 25 ft cable, as does the Juicebox I am trying to replace. I had assumed the OEM EVSE would as well, so it was frustrating that it didn't reach the truck's charging port.

The OEM EVSE does not have the ability to program charging times or record any data. That is why I ordered a Grizzl-E Mini. Unfortunately, it wouldn't connect to my home WiFi initially. They say it can only connect to a 2.4 ghz only network but it couldn't connect to the one all my other 2.4 ghz devices are on. I tried another network with both 2.4 ghz and 5 ghz bands and it did connect but only charged at 2.5 kW and I still couldn't access the app to change the charging settings. I sent it back.

I also learned that the app only works if the Grizzl-E Mini is connected to the WiFi your phone is on. That means all the app features are lost when you are away from your home. Frustrating. I suppose you could connect to the truck's WiFi (while you have OnStar) but then the truck has to be ON to do that.

So, we are stuck with "dumb" EVSE's when away from home.

Have you done that when away from home? Their tech support told me I couldn't.

Have spoken to two tech support people. The one in India was useless. He told me it had to be on a dedicated network with no other devices on it
