GM's Cool Towing Camera's - Where'd They Go???

  • Does the turn signal popup occur when not towing?
  • What other cameras are or are not there?
    • Transparent trailer?
    • etc?

Don't know why the omission, except it could be coming via an OTA. I've gathered it seems to take some calibration and finesse to get all these camera views to work for any particular vehicle, for example with a trailer, does the truck know where the blind spot is? If there are a lot of missing trailering camera views than my guess is OTA

No way their flagship pickup is missing these capabilities, it’s going to be a huge disappointment if they purposely left it out. At minimum they should offer us an explanation as to why it would be different for our EV trucks.
I wouldn't worry, I'm sure it'll OTA - as you say its the flagship and I think the biggest seller.

Yeah on thinking further I bet its that they want/need this to work for trailering too correct?* So it needs to be calibrated for the trailer, and last I heard the trailer app isn't fully implemented. I'll bet its hung up on that.

* Because if it is there working just for the truck, and you have a trailer, it could be a potential liability as they'd get lawsuits claiming accidents because the view didn't include the trailer when towing. They need it to adapt to both situations, and maybe they have a fancy PIP or split view combing cameras to do something fancy.

We've discussed this elsewhere, no doubt it'll keep coming up. I think this is the thinking here ....
  1. Tow mirrors are an old school ICE solution to visual awareness, in a world with no cameras and no concern for aero
  2. In the modern world cameras are cheap and as important screen real estate is cheap, while good aero is dear
  3. Therefore only provide standard sides (per DOT regs) and make standard best in class camera views
Which they've done. I drove a huge box moving truck not long ago - no rear view because of the box, but it had great sides. I would have much preferred a modern camera system. Don't know what I'd use - overhead as standard? That would probably be best.

Anyhow I'd suggest stepping back and thinking about - assuming GM brings in all the camera views do you really need those elephant ears off the sides? This is similar to the CarPlay discussion. Other than for some tradespeople who have specialty apps like logistics and routing, I haven't heard a single good example of needing CarPlay where the built in isn't equivalent or better, but people still cry about it.

Oh yeah I kind of mixed up this discussion with that about towing mirrors, my bad ... anyhow I'm sure we'll get it via OTA as I posted above. Anyhow I'm glad we have an actual in mirror blind spot monitoring alert instead of a red LED hiding in the speaker grill, as Tesla does.
