GM Removing Carplay/Android Auto from all EVs

Guess I'll cancel my order, no sale without this. I hate integrated car systems, it's like 1990 all over again.

so much better to sit in a minus 30 deg. vehicle programming your map than in a warm house doing it on your phone
but gm knows better

... You can send directions to the in vehicle nav using the app on your phone... So your comment is null and void.
GM is chasing that fat SaaS profit margin with subscriptions. Just wait until your entire car is a subscription with add-ons for seat heat warmers or more horsepower on weekends.

IIRC BMW is already doing seat heaters as a subscription.

And Mercedes puts more hrsprs (hp) behind a paywall too.

Google Maps and Apple Maps are equally capable, and GM's apps lets you push directions to the Google Maps on your Vehicle and you can save map directions.

Why do in one step what you can do in three, amiright? Pay more, forever, for a worse experience.

It's a single step... No more different that setting your path in your cellphone app and plugging it into your car selecting the app and going on your way.

except i have removed google and google maps from my iphone for reasons i will not get into here, as well as removing facebook and wave
so what options do i have now
I think beyond the CarPlay/android auto issue, that’s a big one. I avoid all things Google, for example I used to buy Sony TVs, but refuse to do so now.
Speaking of avoiding google...

Yahoo Finance said:
GM told investors on Tuesday it’s looking to achieve profit margins of more than 20% on “new businesses” by 2030. That would be above the company’s overall 2030 operating margin goal of 12% to 14%.
Pros have speculated GM could charge subscriptions for services such as insurance by tapping into an accumulating stream of data that it owns.
“It’s part of where we’re going as a company,” Jacobson added. “Obviously data and software is a big competitive space across the board.”
Good take by John Gruber:
The more I read about GM’s thinking, the more alarming it seems. It doesn’t seem to be about being able to provide a better experience than CarPlay, but instead about collecting surveillance data that Apple’s privacy rules don’t allow. Sozzi just breezes past this notion of using surveillance data to sell car insurance, but a car that reports such data to insurance companies seems like a privacy disaster. My insurance company doesn’t need to know how fast I drive, or where I go and when.

Select destination on your phone, hit go.

vs

Select destination on your phone within an app that is Silverado EV friendly. Hit share, select car, hit send. Switch device to car head unit, accept shared address, hit navigate to destination.

I had this functionality on a BMW ~10 years ago. I used it once, to see what it was like. Then, never again, because it was annoying extra steps for no upside.

LOL No,

It's Open Maps app on phone, select destination on your phone, turn on vehicle, connect to carplay, open carplay app, select maps, go on your destination and start rout.
vs
Open MyChevrolet app, Select destination in myChevrolet, send to vehicle. Turn on vehicle, maps pops up with destination ready to go rout started.

No sounds like I just look into details.

I too would like CarPlay to stay but I'm also thinking of the alternatives.
s0unds like your not thinking about , but pushing it
if gm doesnt provide a product that i want , then it becomes junk to me

Sounds like you’ve never used CarPlay.

If your phone is naving, it’s already naving on CarPlay. Also, modern CarPlay is wireless— so there’s no “connect your phone”.
It does not take a PHD to figure out that this is about money for GM. In the 10-20 articles about this GM has talked about revenue streams, profits and data. They must think the thousands of reservations holders are stupid and can’t read. They aren’t talking about features for consumers, unless you count vague talk about navigation with charging. $85 a month, $135 a month, 20 billion in revenue, insurance sales, data. This is not the language of a corporation excited to provide useful features to consumers, this is a desperate language of a broke corporation that wants to fleece its customers.
It’s just too bad they can’t figure out that making good products is what makes corporations money. There is a lot to like about Chevy trucks, turning their EVs into data mining subscription services is not something people like.
