GM is going to be using the old AMC headquarters in Detroit to help expand their EV production.
As General Motors pivots toward its goal of manufacturing one million new EVs annually in North America by 2025, it is progressively expanding its operations in Michigan to support the goal.
According to Crain’s Detroit Business, GM is currently in the process of leasing some or possibly all of the former AMC headquarters building on Plymouth Road in Detroit. Measuring 760,000 square feet, this facility will be used to support EV manufacturing at the GM Factory Zero plant in Detroit-Hamtramck. The space is approximately 7.5 miles from Factory Zero, which currently produces the GMC Hummer EV Pickup. In the future, Factory Zero will also assemble the Hummer EV SUV, the Chevrolet Silverado EV, the GMC Sierra EV and the Cruise Origin EV.
GM also reportedly signed a lease for a space of around 715,000 square feet in another building, which is located in Pontiac, Michigan. This new facility will support EV production at the GM Orion Lake plant, where the Bolt EV and Bolt EUV are built.
Additionally, a GM supplier signed a lease for 742,000 square feet of space in Wixom, Michigan. This location is the former site of GM crosstown rival’s Ford Motor Company’s Wixom plant. This building will be used to store and ship parts for GM.
These new real estate deals come on the heels of upgrades to the aforementioned assembly plants. In early 2022, GM announced a $6.5 billion investment in its Lake Orion and Delta Township plants. The Lake Orion investment is earmarked for battery and EV production beyond the Bolts, while the Delta Township outlay is for Ultium battery production. Production at Factory Zero, meanwhile, was temporarily idled in June as the automaker upgraded the plant to expand its EV production capacity.
