The Silverado EV will be able to offer bidirectional charging capability if you have a home capable of handling it.
GM recently announced a collaborative effort with residential solar technology and energy services provider SunPower Corp. to develop a new home energy system capable of powering an entire home during a grid outage via onboard vehicle-to-home capabilities. New home energy system and installation services are set to commence alongside the retail launch of the 2024 Chevy Silverado EV in the Fall of the 2023 calendar year.
In addition, GM has named SunPower as the preferred EV charger installation provider, and exclusive solar provider. Chevy Silverado EV customers will have the option to install their new home energy system at the same time as their Silverado EV charger, or at a later date if preferred. What’s more, SunPower and GM will assess home electric system capability for bidirectional charging, while SunPower will also offer a home solar system for purchase.
Properly equipped, customers will be able to charge their Chevy Silverado EV using energy generated by rooftop solar panels, offsetting the cost of electricity from the grid. Customers will also be able to export energy from their vehicle to their home during peak hours, further offsetting electricity costs, will also relying on the system to provide energy in the event that the broader electricity grid undergoes an outage.
