Seems like an odd decision, I have a hard time believing that a few paint colors adds that much production line difficulty, especially for a legacy auto maker. Feels more like a marketing decision, like a statement that “this is early-adopter/early-release, don’t expect too much here as we get this sorted out”. GM has been going for a slower more cautious release cycle (compare to Ford) because they don’t want to hit bumps in the road, is my guess.

Seems like an odd decision, I have a hard time believing that a few paint colors adds that much production line difficulty, especially for a legacy auto maker. The paint booth and dealing with the color-sequencing is a giant PITA for all the automakers. GM can save a lot if they reduce colors... but it's kind of weird to reduce to two colors. And even weirder still the color they're pushing so hard in TV adverts and roadshows is not available lol.

Limiting the impact of color is also one reason why you see so many cheap looking cars with nasty mold in color (MIC) black bumpers, garish cladding, and rear view mirrors. Saving money by contrasting one side of a cut-line was a terrible cost-cutting-fad ... IMO this resulted in some of the ugliest cars ever produced.

Especially when this cheap azz black plastic is poorly UV treated, so it starts to fade and make the car look like trash after a few years.

I understand how beneficial reduced colors can be. To illustrate: the Bolt was available with 3 optional colors each year, up to 2021. With the release of the face lifted model, it’s back to a standard palate that doesn’t change.

I completely agree that the blue they’ve been showing should be the launch color for the RST First Edition, in the same way that the Hummers are launching in a limited time color. White/black makes sense for the fleet sales, which will likely end up with some sort of logo on them.
